Diary #1 Beginning of Revolution Éléonore Petit's perspective view
May 7th
Today was another miserable and pathetic day. I had to go to Montreuil to make clothes for few customers there. Since, today was a busy day, I had to wake up early, make some foods for my children, and left home. My client, Madam Moreau is very rich, but also mean and strict. She looked bossy and pretty mean. And I felt sorry for a young little girl who serves her, named Anais.
It was so obvious that Madam Moreau is in Second estate class and Anais is in Third estate class. France is divided by three classes right now. First class is Catholic Priest(clergies), second class is Nobles. And third classes are peasants, which many people are there. It’s a pretty unfair world to us right now. Because Nobles, and the king and queen enjoy party and wear fabulous clothes, while peasants are suffering from hunger. Louise XVI always listen to the Nobles, because Nobles give most of power to the King. Louise XVI, and his Nobles friends kept on enjoying parties, wearing fabulous clothes and making fabulous palace.
I am the one who makes fabulous clothes for nobles. I always wanted to be a seamstress when I was young, and I succeed my dream job! I am in Third Estate class, and I'm Artisan. At least I have enough money to live, and I don't suffer hunger like peasants.
One day I realized how the life of my work and my home is very different. My daily routine is going to Nobles' house, and sew or make clothes for them. But when I come back from my work, I go back to my house and town. I see so many differences between my working place and my town. I greet my two sons in home, and I get sad when they don't eat a lot, whom waited for me the whole day. Honestly, my job is not a job that I can be proud of. Peasants hate Nobles and Royals, because they have life of luxury such wearing unique and fabulous dresses. Somehow, my job is to help Nobles to be more luxurious. And the money I get paid, is probably the money paid from peasants.
Peasants couldn't hold this anymore and France brought revolution. Peasants and some Artisans made National Assembly and attended the meeting to make new Constitution Laws. But what I'm worrying about now is that, if revolution happens, Nobles get powerless and I get no more customers.
I met Anais while she was going to Grocery Store. She seemed to have huge pile of groceries, so I decided to help her. We got more friendly because I saw her few times before when I sewing a cloth for Madam Moreau. There was a large crowd, and we decided to squeezed into the crowd. People were persecuting Governor and Lieutenant governor. Anais seemed curous about the execution. She looked shocked and dizzy after she saw the execution. I realized that she was only 15 years old, and I felt sorry for her. I tried to cover her eyes as soon as possible, but she already saw it. Her face got pale and her eyes got bigger. Tears fell down from her eyes, but I couldn't say anything, because I couldn’t do anything.. about this society. Suddenly I wanted to blame this cruel society.
Bringing up a revolution is not such a bad idea, but killing all the Nobles and Royals, is not a good thing? Nobles and Royals, they certainly did wrong things and they deserve it, but we don’t have right to kill them. Diary #2 Radical Period Louise XVI's execution held out
Dear Myself.
January 21, 1793
I am still staying in Montreuil for sewing Madam's clothes. I was heading to cloth shop to buy some more fabrics. Then I bumped into a nun by accident. I said sorry, and I realized she was in a first class. How lucky she was! I thought she was gonna yell or shout at me, but she was pretty nice. She said she was coming to her hometown to visit her parents' house. So we asked each other which way we are going, and then I learned that she was the daughter of Madam Moreau! What a coincidence! Unlike her mean mother, she was really nice. Her name isAdeline Moreau.
We talked about Revolution going on nowadays. And she said she was worried about her parents, because peasants are furious with Nobles, and it's dangerous to be novel nowadays. Then I learned that Louise XVI's execution was today! I was thrilled and asked her if she's going. She said she might, but I was not sure if I should go. Because I don't want to see a person dying with head chopped. Anyway we said goodbye because I had to go back to my workshop in Montreuil.
Later that night, I decided to go and watch Louise XVI's execution. It would be vile and violent, but I was curious at the same time. I never saw my country's king before. I can't believe to see my country's king for the first time on the day of his execution..
After walking, many people were surrounding guillotine. It was about to start!
'Wow, this is the guillotine that many people talked about' I thought in myself. 'What a strange and scary looking thing...' Lots of people were cheering and shouting. Most of them looked happy and excited. I thought to myself, 'How cruel to be excited when someone is dying...' Suddenly, all the people yelled and screamed louder. The King Louise XVI was entered to the Guillotine. Everyone was cheering and shouting, while Louise XVI's body was tied tightly by ropes. He had this sad and gloomy face. He looked years older then the picture I saw on the portrait.
I was wondering about something while the execution was going on. I understand that all these people are mad and furious with First estate class, Second estate class, and the king. Because they had tremendous amount of joy on wearing dresses, and having a party, while peasants were suffering from hunger. France's economic dropped down and down...And that is the reason why revolution started.
But to me, I can't understand the reason why we have to kill all the Nobles, Clergies, Peasants who didn't follow in revolution. I pretend on following revolution, but I know what might happen if I try to disband revolution. I might die on the guillotine.
Guillotine made scary chopping sound and Louise XVI's head got chopped. Everyone were yelling and cheering and some of them even cried. It was very cruel and vile to watch the execution. I was shocked because, it was my first time watching someone dying in execution. Robespierre held out Louise XVI's head and everyone were cheering louder. It was such a long time I haven't see peasants being so happy like this. People pulled out handkerchief to touch blood coming from King Louise XVI's head. Everyone wanted to memory themselves that they were in the execution of King Louise XVI.

Dear Myself,
So many years have passed since Louise XVI died. So many things changed in France last in few years. French Revolution was going too far during last 10 years. At first, the idea of French revolution was good and fresh, and I think it was a good reason to have revolutions. Some of the good things were added to French Government. There became three heads representing the government. Which are Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary. These three heads do most of the job on making laws, passing laws and interpreting laws. During the time when Louise XVI was controlling the country, he was a dictator. There was no Judiciary and Legislature. The King passed, and interpreted the laws. Which is pretty unfiar and I'm so glad that revolution changed it. Bad things were added to French Government too. Because of revolution, the French government became unstable. French people were afraid of counter revolution, also called as Coup de Brumaire. Economies didn't get better, even though there was a revolution. Austria declared war against France because the brother of Marie Antoinette, which was the king of Austria, heard that Marie Antoinette was executed, and he got mad. So it was obvious that Austria hate us. And Prussia(Germany) and Spain, Britain and other countries joined Austria for war against France. French People were afraid of wars, and counter revolutions, and this period of time is called as Reign of Terror.
It was the most depressing years. I realized that many people were tired of Revolution now. I was so glad when Jacobin's club was closed and church reopened. I guess I am part of Girondins, because I believe that revolution went too far. Robespiere were executed later, because many people were threatened by him. Many people thought that he is cruel and violent, and they thought the revolution went too far. So Robespierre was guilotined on 1794, and Danton also got executed on 1793. As soon as Robespierre were executed, the terror ended.
So during the Reign of Terror, many people were afraid of wars against other European countries. That is when Napoleon appeared. To many people, Napoleon is like a hero. He won many wars against other European countries. He was smart and intelligent and he was good at making strategiens for wars. But I realized that he was a dictator. He made Napoleonic code, which made him to pass and make laws. Legislature and Judiciary started not to function well. It became similar as the time when Loiuse XVI controlled France. Except that Napoleon didn't raise many taxes and enjoyed luxurious life. But I guess, many people don't realize that though. Many people still think that Napoleon is like a hero. They don't know how Napoleon is similar with the time when Louise XVI controlled. Oh well.. Revolution changes a person's personality and everything.
Here's example..Few years after King Louise XVI and Marie Antoianette died, there was a client named Jean Harcourt. He was in the Second Estate Class and he was very rich. But he was very mean and he thought that Third Class people were disgusting. How mad was I, when I had him as my customer! But it was a nice thing that he ordered me to make clothes for his two children. Anyway, I saw him again after few years later. I greeted him and I was so surprised! Because he became so nice! How surprising was that! I guess Revolution changed everything, even a person's personality.
